onaltecan pottery, which dates back at least to the 17th century is famous for its exquisite brush painting and for its aromatic clay. Loza del Olor (aromatic ceramic ware) is renowned throughout Mexico for the flavor it imparts to the water stored within. In the early 20th century, some Tonalß pottery was elaborately painted with very fine and feathery brushstrokes appearing almost Chinese or Persian in the attention to detail and style. Tonaltecan pottery is burnished before it is fired. This piece displays fabulous artistic experimentation and subtle departure from traditional color and design. The all-over floral motifs are painted with natural pigments mined in the Tonalß vicinity.
